Full Description of Exile II: Crystal
Souls for Windows
1.1 What is Shareware?
Shareware is a way of selling software. Exile II: Crystal Souls is not
being sold on store shelves in a shrinkwrapped box. Instead, it is put
up on computer networks for download. You can download it and play the
first third of the game absolutely free. Then, if you want to play the
rest, you can buy a password to play the rest of the game.
1.2 Where do I get Exile II: Crystal Souls?
Get Exile II for Windows
1.3 What do I get for registering?
When you register, you get the password to play the entire game. In addition,
you get full documentation. Finally, for $35, you get the full Exile II
bundle, which also includes a hint book and character editor.
1.4 Do you have a web page?
There are several web pages for the Exile games. Other
pages
1.5 Bugs and troubleshooting.
Q: My game became unregistered when I moved up to a new version!
A: When you register, make a copy of your misc.dat file and put it in
a safe
place. Put in in the folder with the new copy of the game.
Q: I register, but then the game is unregistered when I run it again!
What
do I do?
A: Sometimes, the game becomes corrupted when it becomes uncompressed.
Contact me at SpidWeb@aol.com, or call me at (206)789-4438, and I'll
reregister your copy.
Q: When I run Exile, the colors in all my other applications turn strange.
A: This is an unfortunate and inevitable result of the way Windows handles
colors. Exile needs to reserve all the colors in the palette for its own
use.
Q: When I open and close a window, all of the colors turn strange.
A: Another program running at the same time is messing with Exile II's
colors. Quit all other running programs. Make sure no navigator programs
are running over Windows (like Norton Desktop). This should fix the problem.
Q: I'm getting crashes!
A: OK. First, turn off sounds. Then, if running Windows 95, turn off the
file checking and compression utilities. Then make sure no other programs
are running. Then move up to a more recent version.
If none of these things work, then contact me. (SpidWeb@aol.com)
Q: The game crashes whenever I try to target a missile.
A: Select No Targeting Line from the Preferences window.
1.6 I got myself trapped! How do I fix the problem?
Occasionally, you may use Word of Recall one too many times and end up
with all your boats across the water. Or, you may kill an important character.
When this happens, use the Exile II Editor to fix the problem. If you
don't have the Exile II Editor, E-mail SpidWeb@aol.com.
1.7 Are there any Easter Eggs?
Yes.
2.0 I have a question in the first 2 chapters.
Run the file "Exile II Docs/Order Form." In the back is a mini-hint
book for the first two chapters. This should answer most of your questions.
2.1 I keep getting killed! How do I get cash?
The file "Exile II Docs/Order Form." also has copious hints
for getting started in the back. Also, the unregistered version of the
editor can give you all the gold and food you want. Consider it an interest
free loan.
2.2 How do I destroy the evil altar in the undead fort?
First, read the hint section referred to in 2.0. Then, if you're still
in chapter 1, don't worry about it. You'll be back here in Chapter 4,
and will have enough power to destroy it then.2.3 How do I pass the 3
portcullis puzzle in the Test of Mind?
This is a trick question of sorts. Unlike the earlier portcullis puzzle
in the Tomb of Delrin-Bok, you can't get all 3 portcullis open at once.
Fortunately, there's a sneaky way out. Search VERY carefully for secret
passages.
2.4 I keep getting diseased! Why?
Perhaps you should carefully inspect your inventory.
2.5 I can't get through the second portcullis in Erika's tower.
When you pull the lever to open it, look east at the portcullis. It's
open. Start walking towards it, looking at it at every step. You may see
it close.
2.6 I suddenly find I don't know the ritual to close the Empire Portal.
There was a bug in early version which sometimes made you forget the ritual
to close the Empire Portal. Go back to the Barrier Tower and search all
the bookshelves. You'll relearn the ritual.
2.7 How do I pass the third guardpost on the way to the Empire Portal?
You have to step on the spaces (8,14) and (18,16). Reaching those spaces
may be tricky.
2.8 How do I pass the six levers in the Trapped Halls?
You need a scroll from the Tower of Sixus (talk to Abby in Almaria to
find it). Reach the intelligent statue and talk to it to find the scroll.
When you get the scroll, look at it carefully.
2.9 Is it possible to reach Sixus without him dying?
Yes. Pay VERY close attention to the special encounters you find.
3.0 What is Exile II: Crystal Souls written in/on?
I do all my Macintosh development in C, on CodeWarrior Gold, on a PowerMac
6100. For Windows, I use Borland Turbo C++ 4.5.
3.1 What about Exile III?
About Exile III: Ruined World
3.2 Can I use characters from Exile: Escape from the Pit?
No. Exile II takes place several years after the first game. Also, if
you could bring in your earlier characters, they'd be WAY too powerful.
Fortunately, there's nothing stopping you from creating a party like the
one you played in the first game.
